Mary Elizabeth Scherer, 80, of Lancaster, PA, passed away peacefully to be with her Savior April 14, 2015 at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster, PA in the company of her loving family members.  Mary was the loving wife of Russell Joseph Scherer for the last 23 years.

She was born in Reynoldsville, PA, to Paul and Adelaide Spears on September 22 nd , 1934.  She graduated from Reynoldsville High School in 1952.

In addition to raising her children, she also had a successful professional career which included assignment as secretary to the Dean at the DuBois Undergraduate Center, Penn State; working in administrative positions at Goodwill Industries, and prior to retiring was office manager for Ophthalmologist Dr. William Hill and Associates in DuBois for many years.  She was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Cultural Resources Inc., (CRI) serving as Treasurer.  She also served on the Student Advisory Committee at the DuBois Business College.

For most of her adult life she was a faithful member of the Lakeside Methodist Church in DuBois, PA where she was active in many church related activities including the Chancel Choir and had served as chairwoman of the Trustees.

Her hobbies included golf, spending time with her four grandchildren, gardening, dancing, and active participation in many civic functions including the DuBois Community Christian Choir.

She is survived by her husband Russell, her sister Marjorie Murdock of DuBois, PA; her son Robert Timothy Reay of Aurora, IL, Vickie Lynn Reay of Lancaster, PA; and four grandchildren Stephanie Reay of Chicago, IL, Suzanne Reay of Aurora, IL, Jacqueline Hilton and Darian Hilton of Lancaster, PA, stepdaughters Cynthia Sculuca of Moon Township, PA, Heidi Campbell of Cape Coral, FL, and stepsons Gary Scherer of Camp Hill, PA and Noah Scherer of Cape Coral, FL.  In additions to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Irving Reay, a sister Vivian Casey, two brothers Paul Spears and James Spears.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrate Mary’s life at the Lakeside United Methodist Church, 420 First Street, DuBois, Pa on Saturday, May 23 rd , 2015 at 11:00AM with the Pastor Bob Zilhaver officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Lakeside United Methodist Church, Raise for Praise Project, 420 First St., DuBois, PA 15801.

Mary’s family would like to also thank the Mennonite Home and Hospice and Community Care for their kind and compassionate care extended to Mary during her illness.
