June Loucks Evans

June Loucks Evans was born on June 16, 1934 in Washington, D.C. to Marguerite Livingston Loucks and Philip Geiselman Loucks. In 1941 her family moved to York County where she graduated valedictorian at Wrightsville High School. She attended Goucher College, graduating with honors in chemistry.

She married Warren Hubbard Evans and relocated to the Washington, DC area where they raised their children. She returned to school later in life and received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from The American University where she later worked as an adjunct professor, teaching courses in human origins and archaeology.

In 1990, after moving back to York County, June began teaching anthropology and archaeology at Millersville University including summer field schools and initiating the archaeology minor. She retired from Millersville University in 1999, becoming Professor Emerita.

June was actively involved in local community planning, political and environmental issues through numerous organizations including the Eastern York County Smart Growth Coalition, Hellam Township Environmental Advisory Council (which she founded and chaired), Rivertownes, The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education (board of directors), PA State Historic Preservation Board, and served on the steering committee for the York County Historic Preservation Plan.

She enjoyed her family – her sons Robert (and wife Renee), Jonathan (and wife Amy), and Andrew (and wife Lori) and especially her seven grandchildren (Nicholas, William, Lucas, Ethan, Quinn, Amaya, and Alexander); gardening; hiking and the sounds of birds in the woods; reading; music; local and early American history and Paleo archaeology; and many good friends through the years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. Friends and family are invited to attend her life celebration on December 27th from 1:00 to 7:00.
