John Gerard Cunningham, Dad, Uncle John, Uncle Frank, Big John, 62, of Lancaster, passed away on July 30, 2024.
John was born in Bayside, Queens on September 27, 1961. He was the son of the late Eugene and Barbara Cunningham (née Hatton). He was a loving and devoted father, brother, uncle, and friend.
John was an avid golfer, cyclist, walker, and traveler. He never met a stranger and always was the first person to ask you if you needed anything. If the answer was yes—or even if it was no—he made sure you had exactly what you needed. He always knew the perfect restaurant to stop at and never gave a bad recommendation. John was the life of the party and the person you always wanted to ring your doorbell. He was all about family and friends and never missed an event!
John was a proud salesman for To-Jo Mushrooms and formerly a PGA Golf Professional.
His love of golf started at an early age when he started playing and working at the Antlers Country Club. He was the Assistant Golf Professional at the Sagamore Resort among many other courses in New York.
The golf business then took John to Missouri where he was the Head Golf Professional at Big Cedar Lodge and helped Jack Nicklaus design and build Top of the Rock Golf Course. After the successful build he caddied for Jack on the opening day of the course.
John then moved to the Lodge of Four Seasons to become the Director of Golf Operations. Afterwards, John and his family moved to Virginia and he transitioned to a sales role becoming the Vice President of Sales for Southern Stainless.
John is survived by his daughter Megan (Nick) Runkel, his son James Cunningham, their mother Ronda Cunningham, his loving partner Anita Kissinger, his brother Michael (Eileen) Cunningham, his nephews Matt (Courtney) Cunningham, Sean Cunningham, Daniel Cunningham, great nephew Ryan Cunningham, and great niece Olivia Cunningham.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Lancaster General Health for their kindness and assistance during John’s final days.
A celebration of life for John will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made either to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the First Tee.
