Jean C. Glidden of Lititz, PA, formerly of Dover, DE, passed away on Tuesday, August 15,
2023, at 91 years of age due to complications from a noncancerous brain tumor.
Jean Frances Cook was born June 27, 1932, in Exeter, New Hampshire, to Raymond F. and Dorothy J. (Baxter) Cook. She graduated from Northfield-Mount Hermon school in Gill, MA, and attended Dickinson College, in Carlisle, PA where she met her future husband, Richardson Glidden. They were wed in 1954.
Following her marriage, she worked as an administrator with the International House at the University of Pennsylvania while her husband attended medical school. They moved to Dover, DE in 1963 where he began his medical practice. While in Dover, Jean was active in the League of Women Voters. She was a lifelong avid amateur golfer and was among the founding members of what is now Maple Dale Country Club, where she devoted much of her time and energy working with the membership committee.
When the Gliddens relocated to Baton Rouge, LA, in 1983, Jean became a mentor and coach for the junior golf program at Baton Rouge Country Club. In addition, she was a volunteer docent for the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition and a volunteer for the 1988 Republican National Convention in New Orleans.
A lifelong learner, Jean loved to read, travel, and meet new people. She was keenly interested in family genealogy; upon her husband’ retirement, they traveled extensively throughout the Unites States and Nova Scotia, and to Italy, exploring many of the places connected to her family’s roots. The Gliddens returned to Delaware for several years prior to relocating to Lititz, PA, where they settled at Moravian Manor Communities.
Jean had a natural flair for art and design and was known for creating elegant homes and gardens for her husband and family. She “never met a stranger” and had a tremendous capacity to love and encourage family and friends alike. She will be remembered for her warmth, her keen intellect, her wit and humor and her generosity of spirit. Her friends and family adored her, and she will be missed deeply.
She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Victoria and Larry Silver of Clearwater, Florida; Jennifer and Steve Black of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania; Elizabeth and Christian Andersen of Dover, Delaware; her grandchildren, Jessica, Erin, and Nikolas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy (Julia Baxter) and Raymond Floyd Cook, her brother Cardell Baxter Cook (“Skip”), and by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Richardson Bringhurst Glidden. Funeral service and interment will be held privately.
