Hugh Edward Miller, age 89, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Born on July 4, 1935 in Franklin, Pennsylvania, he lived in many places including Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan and Brussels, Belgium before returning to Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Oklahoma Military Academy in 1953 and then earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering from Rice University. He was a patriot and proud to have served in the US Army Military Reserves for 9 years.
He was a devoted husband for 58 years to Angela Jones Miller. They traveled the world together, skiing, golfing, hiking, and cruising. He visited all 7 continents. Hugh was a generous and charismatic man with a gift for funny stories and public speaking. He was a hard worker and a strong leader and finished his successful business career as Vice Chairman of ICI Americas. In retirement, he enjoyed passing on his business expertise as a board member of several companies. He loved a good martini, laughing with friends, and rooting for the Phillies and the Eagles. He was an avid reader and delighted in beating his kids in cribbage and backgammon. He dearly loved gathering his family for yearly family reunions all over the country. His passion for the last 30 years has been helping to successfully fund the building, launch, and educational programs of the Kalmar Nyckel, the official Tall Ship of Wilmington, Delaware.
He is survived by his 4 children and their spouses; Susan and Raymond McGlynn, Michael and Kari Miller, Brian and Ana Miller, and Kathryn and Roger Arbabi; as well as his proudest legacy - his 9 grandchildren who loved him dearly and called him Elmo. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Jones and nephew, Gavin Jones.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Hugh on May 3, 2025 at the Kennett Square Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to his favorite charity, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation at Kalmarnyckel.org
