Elizabeth “Anne” Manley, 84, died peacefully Saturday, July 6th, 2016 at the Conestoga View Nursing Home in Lancaster following a brief illness. She is survived by two nieces in West Chester; Rev. Christine Campbell; her son, Ian Campbell and Mrs. Luanne Gates (Jerry Gates) and sons, Paul and Aidan Gates. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brother Lucien Murray Manley in 1971.
Born in Downingtown, Anne was raised in West Chester, Pa. She was the daughter of Edwin and Elizabeth Manley. Ann was a resident of Chester County most of her life until moving to Lancaster in 2008.
Anne spent her life in service to and caring for others every where she worked and lived. From an early age, Ann would help her mother in the Family’s Nursing home on Maple Avenue in West Chester. Anne attended to patient’s needs in a loving, caring manner. She became an exceptional nurse and took over the proprietorship of the Manley Nursing Home when she was 18 years old after her mother died, Anne ran the nursing home until 1972 and then ran a boarding home on the same property until late 1970’s.
After infirmity led her into an early retirement Anne continued to live in West Chester and surrounding area until moving to Lancaster at Hershey Mill retirement home and then at Conestoga View.
Anne had a passion for all animals and had two horses growing up in West Chester. Part of the charm of the Manley Nursing Home were the cats and dogs in residence (until nursing homes became more regulated).
Anne loved her family and family outings. She took her excursions with her nieces to the Flower Show, Devon Horse Show and the shore every summer. Internment is private.
