Douglas Eichelberger

August 12, 1955 — August 19, 2024

Douglas Eichelberger, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully August 19th, 2024 at the age of 69, after a lengthy battle with gastroesophageal cancer. Doug lived a life full of passion, love and laughter.

Doug’s love for the great outdoors was evident to everyone who knew him. Hunting was not just a hobby; it was his passion. The anticipation of hunting season brought him immense joy, and he spent countless hours in nature, embracing the solitude and the thrill of getting that buck or doe and filling freezers of many. His stories from his hunting days were legendary and often shared at family gatherings and always with his hunting buddies, bringing smiles and laughter to those fortunate enough to hear them.

Summers held a special place in Doug’s heart as well. He cherished his time at the beach, where the sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun brought him peace. The beach was his sanctuary, a place where he could unwind and create lasting memories with his loved ones. He also enjoyed many days floating about on his pontoon in the Indian River Bay and loved docking for happy hours for some good appetizers such as shrimp cocktail. Food was his favorite pastime.

Doug was a man of great humor, always ready with a witty remark or a joke to lighten the mood. His sense of humor was infectious making him a joy to be around. His laughter will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He was also known as a modern-day MacGyver, if it was broken, he’d find a way to fix it.

He is survived by his devoted wife Karen of nearly 37 years, who stood by his side through all of life’s ups and downs. Together they raised four children Ryan (Kelly), Corey, Shelby (Dean), and Amber (Luis), who were his pride and joy. Doug’s legacy also lives on in his 14 grandchildren, whom brought him endless happiness and whom he loved deeply. He is also survived by his loving brother Richard (Melissa). He also leaves behind his little fur bestie Willow who would sit on his lap nearly every day.

Doug’s passing leaves a void in the hearts who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the stories, laughter and love that he shared with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a heart as big as his smile.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family to honor Doug’s memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to UPenn Perelman Center: Division of gastroenterology and hepatology. Please note in the memo: For Gastro-esophageal research.
